Quick Somatic Tools to Try Anywhere


Here are 4 simple practices that take less than five minutes:


  1. Orienting the Room: Slowly look around your space. Name 5 things you see, 4 things you feel, 3 things you hear, 2 things you smell, 1 thing you taste.→ Helps your body register “I’m here, I’m safe.”


  2. Vagus Nerve Breathing: Inhale for 4 counts, exhale for 8.→ The longer exhale activates your parasympathetic system (rest-and-digest).


  3. Butterfly Hug Cross your arms over your chest and gently tap your shoulders, alternating left and right.→ Grounds your body and soothes overwhelm.


  4. Tapping (EFT) Use your fingertips to tap lightly on acupressure points (like between the eyebrows or top of the chest) while repeating calming phrases.→ Releases energy and reduces emotional intensity.


These somatic self-care practices are powerful because they work with the body — not against it. The more often you practice, the easier it becomes for your nervous system to shift out of stress and into calm.
